The Neuro-Somatic Play Method

The Return

A nervous-system & somatic framework.

Neuro-Somatic Play builds the neurological scaffolding strong enough to hold spirit within the body — using elemental forces to ignite life force, so that emotion moves freely, essence grows, and a person lives from the fullness of who they are.

Chapter I

Foundations. What runs through it.

Beneath every layer, the same threads run through everything — the places where biology, neurology and lived sensation meet, and the reason the work reaches what talk alone cannot.

The felt interior

Beneath every technique sits a single capacity: to feel the body from the inside — breath, heartbeat, the gut, the quiet weather of sensation. Before a body can move differently or truly settle, it first has to be felt. Much of this work is simply restoring that signal: the sense, so often lost, of being at home in one’s own skin.

The soil beneath

The gut and the nervous system are in constant conversation, most of it travelling upward — from body to brain — along the vagus nerve. The gut’s terrain helps shape the raw materials the nervous system depends on, which is why tending the soil is less a metaphor here than a place to begin.

At the body’s pace

The work moves only as fast as a body can integrate. A nervous system braced for threat is met gently and settled before it is ever asked to open — never pushed past what it can hold. This is what keeps the work safe in any hands, and why it can be carried by others without losing its care.

Through and beyond illness

For those arriving after serious illness — through and beyond cancer treatment especially — the work attends to the nervous system and to the felt sense of a body reclaiming itself. It is offered alongside medical care, never in its place, and always in step with each person’s treating team.

Core principles

01

Sensory before motor

The body must register before it responds. Feeling precedes action at every phase.

02

Spirit over personality

When the scaffolding is strong enough, personality relaxes — becoming a way of expressing essence, not surviving its absence.

03

Change the soil

Mood, personality and behaviour are the fruits. They follow when the biological soil is restored.

04

Not broken, compressed

Every coping pattern is an intelligent adaptation. The work creates the conditions for what is already whole to surface.

Chapter II

The Session. From seed to shared field.

Each phase builds on the last, and the sequence is neurological. Phases 00–04 build the scaffolding. Phase 04b trains somatic literacy in relation. Phase 05 is the full expression of spirit through a clear, regulated nervous system. Phase 06 gathers everyone into one shared field of safety and belonging.

Before you arrive

Your Human Design chart

Generated from your exact birth date, time and place. The facilitator uses your Sun gate as the archetypal compass for the session; without it, Phases 00 and 05 cannot be personalised.

Please share your full name, birth date, exact birth time and place of birth. Free charts are available at jovianarchive.com or mybodygraph.com.

A body-awareness intake

Before the session, notice where your body is holding tension, weight or numbness. Unfelt emotions do not disappear — they settle into the body and quietly shape behaviour, relationships and decisions.

Medications & supplements

A current list of prescribed medications and supplements, so each session is shaped safely around them. Nothing is changed or stopped without your prescribing practitioner.

Your wider care team

Many guests come to the work through their GP, psychiatrist, psychologist or allied health practitioner. With your consent, we stay in step with those who already hold your care, so the work sits within it rather than beside it.

“If I let go, everything will collapse.”

Chest

Grief · disappointment · emotional self-protection

“I keep going even though something hurts.”

Gut & solar plexus

Fear · boundary violations · self-doubt

A simple self-inquiry

What might I not be fully expressing right now?

Where am I holding myself back, or holding something in?

What feels unsafe to say, show or feel?

What has my body been carrying that my mind has moved past?

Don’t jump to solutions. Simply stay with what arises.

The eight phases

00OrientationThe seed of essence5–10 min

Before the body moves, the essence is named. The Sun gate is the signature of what this person is here to ignite.

Sensory · first

The body reads and registers before any action is taken.

Motor · responds

Expression follows what was felt — not what was decided.

Sit or lie quietly. The facilitator speaks the gate quality. Participants simply breathe and receive.

  • The facilitator reads the Sun gate quality aloud; participants simply receive
  • No intellectual engagement — purely receptive
  • The body will embody it in Phase 05, once the scaffolding is ready

The scienceArchetypal priming is thought to engage the brain’s default mode network, creating a settled, anticipatory state without switching on analytical effort.

01Elemental ActivationEarth · bone · pelvis15–20 min

We begin with elemental forces — earth, bone, the ground itself. These are the yin forces that will hold spirit. Without this foundation, spirit floats above the body, never truly held.

Sensory · first

Feel the ground receiving the body’s weight before any movement.

Motor · responds

Then pelvic undulation and spinal wave — movement follows contact.

Lie on the ground. Before moving, feel. Let the ground’s feedback be the first instruction. Then allow the sacrum to respond, and let life force begin its upward movement.

  • Feel the ground receiving the body’s weight first
  • Bone activation — pelvis, sacrum, femurs, spine
  • Life force rising: yang energy moving upward from the earth
  • Barefoot contact with the earth where the setting allows

The scienceProprioceptive input supports vagal tone and the shift from shutdown toward a socially engaged state. The sacral region carries parasympathetic outflow. Early research on grounding (barefoot earth contact) suggests possible effects on inflammation and stress markers; the evidence is promising but still preliminary.

02Voice ActivationSpirit through the throat · the breaking point10–15 min

The voice is where spirit first meets the world. When personality holds the throat, the voice is managed. When spirit moves through it, the voice breaks — and what comes through is the authentic self.

Sensory · first

Feel the breath, the chest vibration and the throat impulse before sound is made.

Motor · responds

Release sound in response to what was felt, not what was decided.

Before making sound, feel. Let the sound arise from what you feel, not what you decide. At the edge, stay. Let what needs to come through, come through.

  • Low tones: life force grounding in the chest
  • Mid range: releasing the managed, social voice
  • The breaking point: where personality surrenders and spirit comes through

The scienceThe vagus nerve runs through the larynx, and around 80% of its fibres are sensory, carrying information from body to brain. Voice work releases holding in the jaw, hyoid and neck fascia.

03Heart IntegrationSpirit descending · gut · laughter15–20 min

The heart is where spirit meets the emotional body. The downward movement — heart to gut to pelvis — is spirit landing fully in the elemental vessel. Laughter is what happens when spirit moves without obstruction.

Sensory · first

Feel what is present in the heart before acting on it.

Motor · responds

Let it move downward — not directed, followed.

One hand on the heart, one on the belly. Before anything, feel. Let what is there be fully registered, then allow it to move downward.

  • Downward integration: heart → gut → pelvis
  • Soft internal laughter — life force moving freely, not performed
  • Around 90% of the body’s serotonin is made in the gut — the biological soil of the work

The scienceThe gut’s own nervous system holds around 500 million neurons, and most gut–brain traffic travels upward. Laughter lowers cortisol, supports oxytocin and endorphin release, and stimulates the vagus through the diaphragm.

04Emotional AlchemyEmotion as life force · the release15–20 min

Stuck emotion is stuck life force. The key is not to change the feeling — it is to let it be fully felt until it moves on its own.

Sensory · first

Feel the emotion in the body — locate it, register it fully.

Motor · responds

Transmutation follows through breath, sound and gesture — not cognitive reframing.

Before transmuting, feel it — fully. Don’t try to change it. Be willing to let the feeling be there. The emotion completes itself when fully received.

  • Locate the emotion as physical sensation — where, and what texture?
  • Reception is the mechanism — not effort, not technique
  • See the transmutations below

The scienceInteroceptive signals are processed in the insula. Anxiety and excitement share very similar physical arousal; research on reappraisal shows that how we name that arousal shapes how we experience it.

04bAwarenessSomatic literacy in relation · play as medicine20–30 min

These practices train the body to read energy through itself — the body as the instrument through which spirit communicates. The social mask drops during genuine play.

Begin with body calibration, establishing each participant’s felt yes and no. Move through each practice in turn. Keep it light, curious and genuinely enjoyable.

  • Body calibration — sensing the body’s yes and no before the mind overrides it
  • Advance / Retreat — reading the field between two people beneath personality’s preference
  • Flow / Stop — distinguishing life force moving freely from life force blocked
  • Voice in relation — spirit expressing through sound in relation: response, not performance

The sciencePlay and laughter engage the ventral vagal system and support oxytocin release. Body calibration is offered as a felt-sense awareness practice, not as a diagnostic test.

05Sun EmbodimentAuthentic expression · the full circuit20–30 min

The scaffolding is strong. Life force is moving. Spirit is held. Now essence expresses itself through the Sun gate — not as performance, but as spirit using the fully prepared instrument to radiate its own quality.

Sensory · first

Feel the Sun gate quality in the body — where does spirit orient?

Motor · responds

Expression follows sensation — not performance, revelation.

The facilitator names the gate quality. Before moving, feel it. Where does spirit want to go? Then let that feeling move outward. Nothing is planned.

  • Expression follows sensation — movement, sound and presence from felt truth
  • The group witnesses; being seen by regulated others is its own medicine
  • The seed from Phase 00 flowers here — essence made visible

The scienceExpression from a regulated, socially engaged state lets the whole group co-regulate; witnessing others’ authentic expression engages our capacity to attune and mirror.

06TheatreThe tribe · bonding & belonging20–30 min

The session began with one seed and ended with one essence, expressed and witnessed. Now the individuals become a tribe. Drawing on the performing arts — improvisation, role play and the spirit of psychodrama — the group bonds not by talking about safety, but by playing its way into it together.

Bring everyone into the circle. Keep it playful, alive, genuinely fun. No one performs; everyone belongs. The play carries the room from “I” to “we”.

  • Tribal belonging — the body-level knowing of being one of the group
  • Safety through play — the mask drops and the nervous system reads the group as safe
  • Collective rhythm — group sound, call and response, synchronised movement
  • Witnessed and witnessing — each one seen, each one holding
  • Spontaneity over performance — “yes, and”

The scienceShared laughter and synchronised movement increase attunement and pro-social bonding, and group co-regulation settles each nervous system inside the safety of the whole.

Life-force transmutations

“Emotions are not only essential information. When processed through the heart, they are a pathway to spirit — and that spirit can light up the soul.”Chad Beckett · On Emotion

Emotion is not the enemy of spirit; it is one of its primary carriers. When emotion moves freely — fully felt, fully received — it completes its cycle and the life force it was carrying becomes available. The release is not effort. It is reception. Courage is the threshold: the first movement where the body says yes.

Activation

Life force moving, but misdirected

Anxiety · Fear → Excitement

A very similar physical arousal. Received fully, the same charge becomes the body’s aliveness meeting what is next.

Grief → Love

Grief is love with nowhere to go. Fully received, the love inside the grief becomes feelable again.

Sadness → Awe

The sensitivity that turns inward as sadness can open outward as awe. Only the direction changes.

Collapse

Life force that has withdrawn

Shame → Dignity

Shame is life force turning against the self. When the body can stay with the sensation without collapsing into its story, what remains is the self still standing.

Apathy → Willingness

Apathy is life force exhausted by suppression. Willingness is the body opening slightly — the first movement of something still alive.

Anger → Passion

Anger is life force with a target. Received rather than acted out, the charge becomes purposeful, creative energy.

Defended

Life force protecting the constructed self

Pride → Humility

Pride defends the constructed self. Humility is the same energy relaxing its grip and opening into real contact.

Desire · Craving → Appreciation

Desire reaches toward what is absent. The same sensitivity, turned toward what is already present, becomes appreciation.

The closing ritual Landing the plane.

The session must never end on the peak. Before returning to the world, everyone lands.

  1. 2–3 min

    Return to the ground

Participants lie on the floor again — the sequence closes where it began. Earth receives what was ignited.

  2. 30 sec

    Shared breath

One collective breath, timed by the facilitator. A single gesture of completion.

  3. 1–2 min

    Eye contact

Brief, genuine eye contact with at least one other person. Being seen by a regulated other seals the loop.

  4. 3–5 min

    One word, or silence

Each person offers one word from their experience, or chooses silence. Not a debrief. The facilitator speaks last.

  5. 5–10 min

    Practical transition

Water and quiet movement — time to return to everyday function before driving or picking up a device.

Chapter III

Resourcing. We never leave it.

There is a temptation to rush toward the dramatic — the catharsis, the breakthrough. But the nervous system does not open because we ask it to. It opens because it feels resourced enough to. Resourcing is not a warm-up; the depth a facilitator can hold, and a guest can travel, is set by how resourced the system is underneath them.

“You can only meet others as deep as you have met yourself. Feel this in your own body first — then you will know how much your guests need it too.”

01

The soil of gravity

The first relationship the nervous system ever has. Before language, before story, there is weight and the ground that receives it. Most people brace against gravity rather than yield into it, holding themselves up instead of being held. We begin by letting the bones drop until the system remembers it is held. This is the ground note; everything tunes to it.

02

Neurological balance

Transmitters and hormones — the messengers of safe or threatened, connected or alone — and yin and yang: the yang drawn down from the cosmos, the yin drawn up as nourishment. The nervous system is the seed; emotion is the weather. We are not controlling the weather. We are growing a seed strong enough to be rained on and remain.

03

The seasons

A seed grows with its season, not against it. The nervous system is meant to move with the cycle we are actually in — not the perpetual summer of constant output. Winter is Kidney time: stillness, conservation, the water element, root-work underground. Move with the cycle and the season carries part of the load.

04

The heart — the heart DJ

When soil, chemistry and season are in place, the heart can do what it is for: reading the room, choosing the frequency. The earlier resources are the set-up, not the destination. Once the system is resourced, the heart becomes a portal to spirit and a compass for the soul. You cannot DJ from a system in alarm — but when the set-up holds, the heart leads.

Pain the resource we have exiled.

Most people can no longer feel pain — not because it is absent, but because we have become masters of avoiding, distracting, suppressing and numbing. Yet pain is information: the body’s most honest signal that something here matters. A system that cannot feel its own pain is not resourced; it is anaesthetised. Part of resourcing is restoring the capacity to feel — gently, titrated, with enough ground beneath that the feeling has somewhere to land. We are not chasing pain. We are ending the war against it.

The fascia and the primal movements.

The nervous system does not stay in the nerves; it feeds into the fascia, the living web that wraps and connects us. State lives in tissue. There are around ten primary fascial movements, and we begin at the pelvis — because in most people the pelvis is frozen and the sacrum compressed, often a long-held protective shutdown.

Decompress

Release the sacrum and unlock the fascia from the ground up. Nothing above can move freely until the base does.

Begin primal

Almost the movements of a baby — bilateral, rocking, side to side — the rhythms the body knew before it knew anything.

Fluid & sensual

Then the voice — the sound of the wild animal beneath the civilised one. Movement that ripples rather than performs.

The energy systems each its own music.

We do not make the energy systems co-dependent; each has its own job and its own quality of aliveness, and they are meant to work together rather than collapse into one another. The head wants to be blown open — to vastness, spaciousness and light. The pelvis wants the opposite — grounded, alive, sensual, powerful; for most people it has been frozen so long they forgot it was meant to be lit. Between them are the places where life gets held: the stomach that tightens and the digestion that shuts down under stress; the pericardium that contracts to protect the heart — which grief, fully expressed, finally softens; and the pelvic floor, unwound and then stabilised, a grounded place to feel emotion from.

Emotions in motion

Emotion is not meant to be endured; it is meant to be in motion — energy that moves through and out rather than setting in the tissue. Its direction is shaped by nervous-system type and by the emotion itself. The key gesture: bring the heart to the emotion. Don’t abandon the feeling, don’t drown in it — meet it. When the heart arrives, even fear can become a portal.

Chapter IV

The Biology. Change the soil.

Most people try to change their thoughts, moods and personality — the fruits. But the microbiome is the soil. It takes part in making the chemistry of mood, motivation, fear, love and meaning.

The cell danger response

Dr Robert Naviaux’s cell danger response hypothesis proposes that chronic illness can arise when cells become stuck in a defensive metabolic state — mitochondria shifting from producing energy to producing defence signals. The body is not broken; it is locked in protection. It is the cellular echo of not broken, compressed. Restoring the health cycle — soil, circadian rhythm, grounding and emotional safety — gives the response the chance to complete, and foundational lifestyle practices come before any biochemical intervention.

The soil and the fruits

The gut microbiome helps produce or regulate the precursors of serotonin, dopamine, GABA and acetylcholine. Research increasingly links its balance to mood and behaviour, though much of it is still early or animal-based. The person is not broken — the soil may be compromised. Restore the soil, and a truer chemistry has room to emerge.

Microbes as neurological actors

Some parasites and pathogenic bacteria have been associated with changes in neurotransmitter production and gut–brain signalling: Toxoplasma gondii with dopamine changes and risk-taking; Candida overgrowth with acetaldehyde, brain fog and anxiety; H. pylori with damage to the gut lining; and the endotoxin LPS from gram-negative bacteria with neuroinflammation. These are assessed individually, never assumed.

The gut–brain axis

The vagus nerve links gut and brain, and around 80% of its fibres carry information upward — the gut reports, the brain listens. The gut’s own nervous system holds some 500 million neurons. When the gut is inflamed, the signal it sends upward is distorted.

Neurotransmitters as a pathway

When the soil is right, the neurotransmitter system becomes the biological architecture of full aliveness: serotonin as unity and the sacred in the ordinary; dopamine as meaning and creative purpose; GABA as the stillness in which presence becomes possible; oxytocin as love felt as a biological state, not an emotion to be managed.

The neurotransmitter map the biology of full aliveness.

We value neurotransmitters as a pathway — not to be managed, but to be restored, so that spirit moves freely through the body’s biological instrument.

Specialist referral

This work is at its best when deeper trauma is already held by a skilled therapist. Where more support is needed, we refer with care — and with the right care, healing is possible.

01

Early developmental trauma

Where there is early neglect, attachment disruption or chronic childhood stress, we ask that participants work with a trauma-trained therapist alongside or before this work.

Often referred to

Somatic Experiencing · Internal Family Systems · EMDR · Primal Trust

02

A sensitised nervous system

For those who are consistently hypervigilant, or who shut down during emotional work, nervous-system retraining may need to come first — especially after medical trauma.

Often referred to

Neurofeedback · DNRS · Gupta Program · Somatic Experiencing, EMDR or IFS

03

Inherited patterns

What is passed down through families can shape expression in ways individual work alone may not reach. Systemic approaches can hold what one person cannot.

Often referred to

Family constellations · Systemic therapy

Chapter VI

The Practitioner. You cannot take anyone further than you have gone yourself.

The framework is a living instrument. Its quality in the room depends on the practitioner’s own embodiment — not their knowledge or technique, but their capacity to be fully present.

“The question is not ‘am I knowledgeable enough?’ It is ‘am I present enough? Is my own life force moving — or is my spirit being managed by my personality right now?’”

Before every session

01

Bring your Sun gate to your current stress

Identify what is alive or difficult in your own life. Hold your gate quality as a felt sense and let it meet the difficulty — this is the potential you are about to create conditions for in others.

02

Check your own state

Are you available, regulated, socially engaged? You cannot reliably invite another nervous system to shift if yours is not already there. Regulate first.

03

Feel the session before you lead it

Move through the sequence somatically, not mentally. Feel Phase 01 in your own pelvis and Phase 02 in your own throat. Know where you are first.

04

Your embodiment is the primary intervention

Participants’ nervous systems are continuously reading yours. You are not delivering a protocol; you are a nervous system others can co-regulate with.

Group delivery

6–12

participants

Small enough for genuine witnessing, large enough for group resonance.

3–4

hours

The full arc needs unhurried time; rushing a phase compromises the sequence.

Monthly

or quarterly

Integration between sessions matters as much as the session itself.

Private

and grounded

Natural materials underfoot, no fluorescent light, warm enough to lie on the floor.

Merging patterns coming home to your own design.

You know the feeling: you finish a session carrying something that isn’t yours — an ache, a grief, an agitation that walked in with your client and stayed in your body. You merged. This is not a flaw; it is the very sensitivity that makes you good at this work. Emotional contagion and co-regulation are well documented — we are built to resonate. The question is whether you can tell what is yours from what you are amplifying, and whether you can come home afterward. This is the medicine of differentiation, the same move at every scale: the cell membrane, the open centres of your design, and the lived boundary of staying in your own body and voice while another moves through their storm.

Defined centres — your broadcast

Consistent, reliable energy that is genuinely yours: what you can lean on, and what others feel from you.

Open centres — where you take the world in

Where you absorb, amplify and sample everyone around you. Your wisdom and your vulnerability.

The open spleen

Takes in the room’s fears and amplifies them, then wonders why it feels afraid or unwell. Knowing this lets you ask: is this mine?

Auric type

A Generator’s aura does not work like a Projector’s, Reflector’s or Manifestor’s. Honour how each design engages and discharges.

To come home is to de-merge — to peel the borrowed weather off your own seed and return to your field, your design, your body, your voice. A practitioner who comes home reliably is no longer a sponge but a clear instrument: present enough to resonate, defined enough not to dissolve.

The nine centres the map of what is yours.

In Human Design the body is mapped as nine centres, each either defined — consistent and yours — or open, where you take in and amplify the world. For a practitioner, the open centres are exactly where merging happens.

The Solar Plexus — the emotional centre, in depth

The seat of feeling, and unusual in being both a motor and an awareness centre. Roughly half of people have it defined, which gives emotional authority: there is no truth in the now; clarity arrives over time as the wave moves. Ride the wave toward a calmer, more neutral point before deciding. The wave is not a problem to fix — it is the instrument of knowing.

Tribal 37–40 · 19–49 — Ratchets up in steps, building tension, then releases. Relationships, bargains, belonging. Touch soothes it.

Individual 55–39 · 22–12 — Even and calm, then a sharp melancholic spike — the creative current. Melancholy here is the down of the wave, and it carries the charge.

Collective 30–41 · 36–35 — Builds on hope toward an experience, then falls when reality differs from the fantasy. The journey is the point.

Beneath all three sits the source wave (59–6). When the Solar Plexus is open (around 47% of people), a person amplifies the emotion already in the room — appearing either the most emotional person present, or as if they have no emotions at all. The gift is letting emotion flow through without claiming it. For the practitioner: if yours is open, much of what you feel in a session may be your client’s wave, amplified.

The Spleen — the centre of intuition and safety, in depth

The oldest awareness centre, living entirely in the now. It governs survival, the immune system, wellbeing and intuition: the soft, non-verbal knowing that keeps the body safe. Its voice is a gentle ping, once, and then gone — which is why it is so easily overridden, and why working with it asks for stillness.

Seven gates, each a primal fear: 48 inadequacy — never knowing enough; 57 the future — the unknown tomorrow; 44 the past — old patterns repeating; 50 responsibility — failing those in your care; 32 failure — things not lasting; 28 death — a life without meaning; 18 authority — being judged or dominated.

Defined (around 55%): consistent intuition and a baseline of wellbeing others are drawn to. Open: amplifying others’ fears and holding on — to people, situations and possessions — long past the point of good. Deconditioned, it becomes rare wisdom about what genuine safety is. This is the body’s alarm, and safety is the ground all resourcing is built on: titration and pacing, never amplifying faster than the system can metabolise.

A structural note — cell membranes

The cell membrane is the body’s most fundamental boundary. Its structure and fluidity rely on essential fats and the co-nutrients that work alongside them — settled cell biology, and in this work a living image for boundaries held with both strength and softness. Educational only; any nutrient decision belongs with individual assessment.

The one thing

If we strip everything away and keep only one thing, it is this: get the practitioner out of their head and into their body — and into their voice. We want you to taste life, with all of its flavours: the full range of your voice and the full range of your emotion. A practitioner who lives in their head can only take a guest into their head. One who is home in their body, alive in their own voice, can bring a whole room home. You are the instrument. Resourcing is how the instrument stays in tune.

When this work is not appropriate

Neuro-Somatic Play engages the nervous system directly — activating, amplifying and deepening emotional experience. That is its power, and why clear contraindications matter.

Absolute

Active psychosis or mania

The work amplifies internal experience; where reality is unstable it can destabilise further. Psychiatric support comes first.

Absolute

Active suicidality or self-harm

Individual stabilisation and professional clinical support must come before group somatic work.

Absolute

Severe dissociation

Phase-oriented trauma therapy to build the window of tolerance is the right first step.

Absolute

Acute trauma within three months

The nervous system needs time to stabilise before amplification is appropriate.

Absolute

Eating disorders in an active phase

Medical stabilisation and specialist support must come first.

Relative

Chronic freeze

Those who spend most of their time in shutdown need titrated individual work before group amplification.

Relative

Active substance dependency

The work can surface material a person cannot yet metabolise without a substance. Assess carefully.

Relative

Recent major surgery or serious illness

Medical clearance first; ground contact and movement require physical safety.

When in doubt: does this person have enough internal resource to let their experience deepen without collapsing or dissociating? If not — refer, resource, and invite them when they are ready.

A framework in development

Igniting spirit. Holding essence.

Building the scaffolding, one nervous system at a time.
